""Aria's prison term will likely begin today; the DOC will probably pick her up and transport her to the Lumley (max custody) Unit at the Perryville Women's Prison in Goodyear... Her classification score will be influenced by her committing offense, her disciplinary record while in jail, and other factors. She will be required to spend several years in a maximum custody prison before she is ever considered for a lesser custody unit, which would be 'close' custody. If she behaves well and programs as required in close custody, she would eventually be allowed to work her way down to 'medium' custody. This is as low as she can ever go, according to the Department's classification system, due to the nature of her crime.
"Her visits and telephone calls won't be approved for at least 60 days and only after each adult who wishes to visit her pays a $25 fee to the DOC. She can have up to 20 people, including children, on her visitation/telephone call list. All calls she makes are paid for by the person accepting the call. She will be issued state owned orange clothing and her supplies of all types of property will be restricted. Although she will have dozens of boxes of legal materials (due to the length of her trial), she will only be able to have up to 3 legal boxes in her cell at any one time.
"Some of the women will consider her a celebrity; some will feel great disdain for her. She will not be able to organize a book club, or re-cycling events at the prison as she suggested she would like to do during her allocution to the court in the guilt-phase trial. Her movement from her cell will be restricted and controlled. She will likely be placed on suicide watch for at least a brief amount of time in order to insure that she does not attempt to harm herself during the initial time period when she attempts to grapple with the fact that she is going to spend the rest of her natural life in prison.
"Legally, she is not eligible to apply for any reduction of sentence through the Board of Executive Clemency. The only way she could ever hope for relief is to have the court overturn her conviction and to be found innocent in a new trial...
"Jodi Arias will be strip-searched each time she has a visit. Only her legal visits or calls will be confidential; her legal mail will be inspected for contraband, but not read. Even if people place money on her spendable account, she will only be allowed to make limited purchases from the inmate store each week. As her privileges are earned, she will be allowed to have greater telephone privileges, visits, and property within her cell. This will be a slow process.
"Even if she desires to do so, the DOC will control whether she has in-person access to any television, radio or book-author visits. Most likely, they will not allow it. If she has sufficient funds on her account, she can write as many letters to as many individuals as she wants, but not to anyone in the victim's family. She can receive as much mail as people send her, as long as it does not include material that would aid in an escape or injury to herself or another person...
"With the exception of her legal counsel working on appeals, she will pretty much fade into the landscape of the women's max custody prison..."
Arias arrived at Perryville! Her new home!
I have been thinking about the fact that JSS was short in her address to Arias.
I believe she was absolutely disgusted with what Arias had to say (along with Willmott).
Given that Arias admitted to the Alexander family that she remembered the knife going into Travis' throat AND that he was conscious, I am sure she wanted to be rid of her ASAP for this last diabolical attack on the family.
Nothing that she could have said about how she felt about Arias would have meant anything and hit deaf ears with Arias. They would have been wasted words (except maybe to get on record).
JSS's remarks made it very clear where she stood and why Natural Life was the ONLY sentence for Arias.
I admire JSS's composure and swift sentencing.
It is over!
