In his closing argument, Kirk Nurmi talks out of both sides of his mouth.
He warns the jury not to be emotionally swayed by the victim impact statements of Travis Alexander’ sister Samantha and brother Stephen.
Then he puts up a lovey dovey picture of a blonde smiling Arias with her hand on the chest of Travis Alexander with green pine trees behind them and says, “Can you kill the woman Travis Alexander loved?” and “this is a sad case.”
In cross examination of Dr. Janeen DeMarte, Nurmi ridiculed her and accused her of being unethical, inexperienced and stupid, but in the closing argument, he uses what she testified to about Borderline Personality Disorder and Arias being sexually abused at a young age to prove his mitigating factors.
He said other than smoking pot, Arias has no criminal record and showed her driver’s license to show she was 27 when she killed Alexander but said although she was intelligent that she was immature for her age and easily manipulated.
“Jodi Arias is not just a person sitting at table at court,” Nurmi says. “She’s also this person.” He points to pictures of Arias with Daryl Brewer and his son Jack. He mentioned that Arias was like a big sister to Jack.
Nurmi said Arias relationship with Brewer was “stable” and said she dyed her hair blonde and got a breast implant to please Brewer and to look like his ex wife.
He also showed pictures of Arias with her family, Bobby Juarez and Matt McCartney.
“This is a snapshot of a girl whose life is in your hands.”
He says they are not allowed to use emotion and then he tries to get them to feel sorry for his poor little mentally ill girl who had a family and boyfriends before the mean old state locked her up.
