Well,
Nurmi is done his first round and Martinez is done.
I am sure there are many that are grading the closing arguments like Jeff Gold.
I found Nurmi to be saying nothing that has not been heard before except he kept referring to the defendant as a girl and mentally ill to drive home his points.
He also brought in the porn - again!
I was surprised at how short his closing was considering how he has usually gone on and on.
I assume what his plan was to have Martinez get his closing in today so that he could finish up tomorrow and send the jury off into deliberations for the weekend rather than have them think about what Martinez said over the weekend and then listen to him again.
Martinez hammered home the crime itself to the jury.
He used the photos again and again to accomplish this.
He got in premeditation.
He got in no remorse.
He got in that Arias does not deserve a gold star for not having a criminal history but rather it is what is expected by society.
He got in that age was not a factor - she was 27 years old!
He reminded the jury of all her lies.
He reminded them of her cover-up tactics.
He even got in the dabbling in Mormonism.
He reminded the jury of the abject lack of professionalism and ethics of Geffner.
He reminded the jury that the diagnosis of PTSD was based on a false story by Arias.
and so much more.....
Was it a powerful closing by Martinez?
Maybe not as much as in the first trial but he used the EVIDENCE to make his points.
He used the truth in his closing.
He brought Travis into the courtroom.
He brought in the fact that the jury is not stupid and can see that the mitigating factors do not outweigh the evidence.
I believe he did very well.
With regard to the Alexander family walking out, I think that they had just had enough and if there was ever a time for them to make a statement, this was it.
Everything was coming to the final end and I am sure that this was playing on their minds and hearts.
They have been stoic throughout these past 6+ years.
They have had to listen to horrific accusations regarding their brother. They have had to hear his entire life being trashed.
They have had to see the terrible, graphic photos more than once.
The thought of listening to Arias' testimony and the lies she was saying was maybe just to much to bear.
Should they have walked out all together?
Who are we to judge this action?
Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
When Nurmi is done his last stand, we finally have the case where it should be, in the hands of the jury.
