The defense (Arias), in their infinite wisdom, feel that they can blind-side witnesses when they get on the stand. And they try it every time.
Arias has no clue about the law and running a trial. She has no idea how to impeach a witness. Nurmi and Willmott should but they continue to show their ineptitude by asking the questions they do.
Wilmott knew that Deanna had never said she had had sex with Travis when she was deposing her before her testimony. She did not ask that question of her because she wanted to try and blind-side her when she was on the stand and prove she was a liar. It backfired on her when Deanna stated that you never asked me and if she had, she would have said yes. Smart move by Deanna to want the audio played. It proved that she was not lying.
Then, as you point out, Martinez cuts to the chase and asks the question directly of Deanna. I am sure it was extremely difficult for Deanna to have to once again admit that she broke the laws of the Mormon church and did in fact have sex with Travis. But she did answer the question with honesty. She will not allow the lies of the defense to, in any way, continue to put Travis "on trial" and destroy his reputation.
Deanna exposed Arias and the DT of the manipulation they were trying. I am sure that the defense (Arias) was furious with Deanna's testimony that left "egg on their face" and demonstrated the lengths that they will go to in order to discredit each and every person that Arias hates.
The line used in the first trial "dirty little secret" has been replaced with "mentally ill young girl" in this trial.
As everyone seems to agree, the Defense (Arias) are retrying the guilt phase with this new jury and completely ignoring that a conviction has been handed down. They ignore that the jury is here knowing of the conviction of Premeditated First Degree Felony Murder with Extreme Cruelty and their only role is to sentence Arias in determining whether she should get the death penalty for her crime.
Martinez will show once again the 29 stab wounds, the slit throat from ear to ear and finally the gun shot wound to the head to help them with their decision.
The good thing about logging in when you come on site is that you can post New Reply but the bad thing was I hit the New Reply button without reading your response to my earlier post. I just read it now and I wanted to repost your reply in its entirety because it was excellent and I agree with every word. You hit the nail on the head when you pointed out Wilmott deliberately did not ask Reid if she had sex with Alexander so she could make Reid out to be a liar. Sneaky and slimy tricks like this seem to be the hallmark of the Arias defense. They seem to be following in the footsteps of their passive aggressive client. They smile at the witnesses and then sneak in through the backdoor and stab them in the back. And it backfires every time.
However, I have to point out that Martinez set them up with Abe because he did not bring up until re-direct that the bogus email didn't have Abe's address on it until after Wilmott had made a fool of herself asking Abe if he was sure he didn't get it and if it is possible that the email when to his spam folder.
Then Martinez swooped in and blind sighted the clueless Wilmott and pointed out there was no address at the top of the email and asked Abe if there was a carrier pigeon email that would get the email to him. Apparently, Nurmi and Wilmott were too stupid to realize that Abe's address wasn't even on the email or they wouldn't have introduced the fake email as evidence that Travis Alexander was a controlling, jealous, possessive boyfriend who forced the poor innocent little Jodi to get rid of her male friends. Arias probably manufactured the email after murdering Alexander like she did the pedophile letters, the shorts and top with Travis Alexander's name emblazoned on them, the emails and text messages to a dead Alexander and the letter to his family trying to frame Deanna Reid as the jealous former girlfriend who slashed his tires and slashed his throat and ordered her boyfriend to shoot him in the head.
Martinez wins in cross and re-direct every time, not only because he is smarter than they are, but because he has the facts, evidence and truth on his side. Wilmott and Nurmi have nothing so they rely on dirty tricks and slander. It is laughable that they think the jury is stupid enough to buy Arias' lies about Alexander being a pedophile and an abuser when her stories even sound fabricated. If she was body slammed by a 200 lb man more than her finger and ribs would be hurt. She would be bruised and sore all over and find it difficult to walk. She would not be able to get up and run into the closet and grab a gun.
You were also brilliant when you said "dirty little secret" has been replaced with "mentally ill girl." That is so true.
Excellent point about Martinez blind-siding the defense (Arias) about Abe and the email. Hadn't thought of that one.
I cannot believe that after all this time, Nurmi and Wilmott would not check and recheck their facts before bringing in evidence that so easily is proven to be false. They certainly are doing nothing to earn their salaries that are lining their pockets.
I think that at this point, the defense (Arias) is just scrambling to come up with something to present.
In doing so they are opening their last bag of dirty tricks but the tricks are so outrageous and poor that it continually backfires on them.
They have nothing left and are getting sloppy in their research and their preparedness for questions. Good lawyers would have noticed that there was no address on the email so they would not be made out to be the fools that they are.
I am sure that Arias is in the background pounding away at them as to what to do next and it seems they are listening. I have said that Arias has no idea about the law and being a lawyer and she is still working on "emotionality" with all that she wants put forward.
They continue to underestimate Martinez and his abilities to tear apart their defense with the truth and real evidence.
One cannot help but notice that he is able, in every issue in this so-called mitigation phase, to refute and expose all of the defense's (Arias') lies.
The rest of this trial will be interesting in that we will find out just how deep the hole that the defense (Arias) is digging will get before they fall in and bury themselves completely.
