RE: End is Near Hopefully - Observer - 02-24-2015

Martinez began his closing with a bang. Even though Nurmi objects every two minutes and there is a sidebar, Martinez keeps sticking the knife right in the heart of the case which hurts Arias.

Quotes from Martinez from tweets by:

Williams Pitts, reporter for 12 news in Phoenix:

"The story the defendant told you about Travis masturbating to pictures of a boy. Just not true."

Martinez puts up on the screen three different autopsy pictures of Travis with his throat slit and his head nearly decapitated and says: "this individual was bad because he watched pornography?"

"Look him in the face and tell him it's bad to look at porn." Martinez pointed to a front picture of TA's nearly-severed head.

"She's the one who used the knife, she's the one who used the gun."

Martinez tells the jury to consider the pain and suffering.

Martinez: #JodiArias says she loves TA, she's so sorry -- but he was a bad guy and was masturbating to child porn?

Troy Hayden reporter for Fox News 10:

"The man that she loved so much. She took a knife and cut him apart."

"You are duty bound to accept that Travis suffered physical and mental anguish before his death."

"She knew right from wrong. She premeditated the murder of Travis Alexander."

"This is not a case about love. This is a case about murder. And the person who committed that murder is here in the courtroom today."

Jenn Wood from Jen's trial diaries:

"Jodi Arias accidentally nicked herself with a razor and said: "Wow that really hurt! I don't want to do this anymore." Well she cut up TA 27 times and he experienced a ton of pain."

"Jodi Arias loved TA so much she took a knife and stuck it in his heart ."

After JA claims TA abused her she writes in journal TA gave her 3 soft, slow kisses. Kissing is the physical abuse here according to her journal.

Juan brings up how Jodi told Abe she was "dabbling in Mormonism."

Juan: Why are they darkening Travis Alexander's character without looking in the mirror. They are turning a blind eye.

RE: End is Near Hopefully - Lunarscope - 02-25-2015

For some reason this trial started with the impact statements that are normally used at conclusion, their walking out had impact and I support!
Nurmi scored a "D" (only) for effort, (at best) nothing pertaining to the crime was discussed, just smoke and mirrors, with false accusations' but he did do his job of showing diligence, we need slime like him to avoid a lynch mob mentality!
Martinez concluded (has a Cop killer trial and tomorrow had been the start date) then Nurmi again gets to talk his disgusting ways, I hope the courtroom all walk out on him tomorrow, even reporters who talk their talk, but jury should be deliberating before lunch break.

RE: End is Near Hopefully - NERN - 02-25-2015

Well,
Nurmi is done his first round and Martinez is done.

I am sure there are many that are grading the closing arguments like Jeff Gold.

I found Nurmi to be saying nothing that has not been heard before except he kept referring to the defendant as a girl and mentally ill to drive home his points.
He also brought in the porn - again!
I was surprised at how short his closing was considering how he has usually gone on and on.
I assume what his plan was to have Martinez get his closing in today so that he could finish up tomorrow and send the jury off into deliberations for the weekend rather than have them think about what Martinez said over the weekend and then listen to him again.

Martinez hammered home the crime itself to the jury.
He used the photos again and again to accomplish this.
He got in premeditation.
He got in no remorse.
He got in that Arias does not deserve a gold star for not having a criminal history but rather it is what is expected by society.
He got in that age was not a factor - she was 27 years old!
He reminded the jury of all her lies.
He reminded them of her cover-up tactics.
He even got in the dabbling in Mormonism.
He reminded the jury of the abject lack of professionalism and ethics of Geffner.
He reminded the jury that the diagnosis of PTSD was based on a false story by Arias.
and so much more.....

Was it a powerful closing by Martinez?
Maybe not as much as in the first trial but he used the EVIDENCE to make his points.
He used the truth in his closing.
He brought Travis into the courtroom.
He brought in the fact that the jury is not stupid and can see that the mitigating factors do not outweigh the evidence.
I believe he did very well.

With regard to the Alexander family walking out, I think that they had just had enough and if there was ever a time for them to make a statement, this was it.
Everything was coming to the final end and I am sure that this was playing on their minds and hearts.
They have been stoic throughout these past 6+ years.
They have had to listen to horrific accusations regarding their brother. They have had to hear his entire life being trashed.
They have had to see the terrible, graphic photos more than once.
The thought of listening to Arias' testimony and the lies she was saying was maybe just to much to bear.

Should they have walked out all together?
Who are we to judge this action?
Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

When Nurmi is done his last stand, we finally have the case where it should be, in the hands of the jury.

RE: End is Near Hopefully - Observer - 02-25-2015

The burden is on the defense to prove mitigating factors and they didn't do that because they spent all their time trying to prove Travis Alexander was a sex maniac, pedophile and abuser.

In his closing statement, Juan Martinez brought out that Alexander's character was not an issue, Arias' character was.

Juan Martinez said there were no mitigating factors and reminded the jury that another jury had found Arias guilty of premeditated murder and extreme cruelty and they had to accept that. He said Alexander was conscious during the attack and felt a great amount of pain.

He said Arias showed no remorse. "Jodi Arias talks out of both sides of her mouth."

Martinez said Borderline Personality Disorder is NOT a mitigating factor because it doesn't have anything to do with his murder. BPD doesn't give her the right to murder him. She has a fear of abandonment but knows right from wrong.

"You don't have to be a certain age to commit a crime so age is not a mitigating factor."

He said Jodi Arias was a spoiled child and she left home because she was grounded, not abused.

He said there was no physical or emotional abuse in the relationship between Arias and Alexander, that she gave as much as she got.

He ends with: "We forgot why we are here" as he holds up more autopsy pictures. Then he asks the jury to "remember the victim" and come back with a verdict of "death."

I thought his closing argument accomplished what he needed it to accomplish. He didn't need to prove guilt, premeditation or extreme cruelty. He just had to prove that Arias and Geffner were lying and accusing Alexander of being a bad person to cover up what she did.

He brought what she did to the forefront by showing the graphic autopsy pictures. What was heartbreaking was to hear that the Alexander family sobbed and sobbed in the courtroom and afterwards as they again saw the autopsy pictures and heard about all his suffering.

I don't blame the Alexanders for walking out when Nurmi read Arias's fake attempt at remorse. They are disgusted at Jodi Arias' trying to manipulate the jury when it is clear she feels no remorse or she would have taken responsibility and wouldn't blamed his murder on him and wouldn't have lied about their loving caring brother being a pedophile and abuser and murdered him all over again in the courtroom.

I for one have no problem judging. The Alexander family should have walked out all together. How they have been able to hold it together all these years of dysfunctional legal crap is simply amazing. Having to listen to Nurmi's (and Arias and Willmott( bullcrap is beyond anything any normal human could endure. These people are so strong. I don't expect a death sentence from this jury, and I don't expect anything from the judge. I do expect the family to hopefully get some rest from this insanity. I doubt it will happen. This crap will affect most of this family for their entire lives as well as their issue. I do hope for the best for them. This legal stuff that has happened in this case just assures me that it is all about the murderer and absolutely not one thing about the murdered. I seriously hope I never watch another one of these bizarre trials again. I know that there are honest trials that happen in this country every day. This is not one of those normal, everyday murder trials that do occur in this country. This trial is proof that if the murderer gets in touch with the media, Katy, bar the door. Everybody and everything bows down to the murderer. This is sickening. There is no telling what Nurmi will by law be allowed to tell the jury tomorrow. What is wrong with us in this system? I for one will hope that Juan will object every two minutes, but being the professional attorney he is, I doubt he will and it won't matter anyway because he won't win. I still hope he will play the game like Nurmi does. Just to screw with the judge!!!!

RE: End is Near Hopefully - Justice - 02-25-2015

I have seen a few posts elsewhere that said Juan was not 'forceful' enough, as he was the last time. To me, he had no reason to 'wait out the 2 minutes' or count the stab wounds or any of that. The autopsy photos told the truth the jury needed to be reminded about.

He showed how the autopsy photos showed all that. They know he had to suffer. The defense has done nothing but trash the name and reputation of a good man. He showed that Arias is not remorseful, but even tried to cover her tracks by leaving voice mail asking if he has cashed the checks, and inviting him to an event, knowing he was rotting in his own shower stall and dead as any man can be.

He proved his points well. I have no idea what kind of performance Nurmi might have planned for tomorrow morning, but it won't go far with the jury. They will remember that Juan kept telling them "Look for the evidence" and they will. They will see on which side the evidence falls. Juan even went back to Fonseca's testimony, which some of them may have long forgotten by now.

I hope there is a verdict at least by sometime on Thursday. These jurors have been held hostage so long, they likely already have their minds pretty much made already. I don't think they will need long to check a box on that ballot in the jury deliberation room. They will find no evidence of her alleged child abuse and no proof of abuse from Travis, except for her own words.

They know now that Borderline Personality Disorder is not a 'mental illness' that makes people go around killing other people, especially in such a brutal ambush, and it was an ambush.

I am sure they noticed the many 'objections' by Nurmi and realize it was all in an effort to prevent Juan from showing them evidence. I farther hope, really hope, that one lady 'note taker' is not picked as an alternate! Someone reported that she was taking lots of notes when Juan was doing his closing statements. She would make a good jury foreman. (Is there a word for a lady foreman??)

RE: End is Near Hopefully - NERN - 02-25-2015

Thanks Observer -
You brought up many more points that were important in Martinez's closing.
Martinez used the tried and true evidence.

Duluth -
I was not insinuating that we are not able to stand in judgement of the Alexander family's mass walk-out. It was just a figure of speech. Everyone has the right to how they feel about the issue.

I understand your frustration with Nurmi and your wishing that Martinez would play his game.
That is not Martinez's style, however, no matter how much we would like to see him play.
He has truth on his side and a respect for the court and the law.

The Alexander family will finally see an end to this madness of two trials very soon.
They will never forget.
They will never have complete closure - Travis is still gone and there is a huge void in their lives.
But my sincere hope is that they find a way to live with it all.

Justice -

I think Nurmi's objections over and over again were for the sole purpose of disrupting the flow of Martinez's closing statement. Once again, he was using distraction as a ploy.

If the jury is in close agreement early in their deliberations, the verdict will be quick.

But I think they will review so much to make sure that all is taken into account.
They have a monumental decision to make, one that not too many people are faced with in their lives.
They will want to get it right.

I for one cannot predict how long they will take - like everyone else.
As long as they do their sworn duty to the very best of their abilities, it is all anyone can hope for.

RE: End is Near Hopefully - Lunarscope - 02-25-2015

I 100% support the Alexander family' including their walking out on Nurmi (Jodi had her mother do a walkout on Martinez in recreation, jury also noticed that vindictive nature), I don't see how any family could manage the unfounded character assassination myself, their assaulted by JII daily for 7 years now!

Examples;
Body bag picture of Travis with insult comments!
Martinez's face photo-cropped on Travis's decomposing body in shower!
On Yahoo news and USA Today find,
JII tweets by "R. Love" threatening Martinez's life on JII during today's closing statements!
For 7 years the assaults have been relentless' and the Alexander family stand stout!

RE: End is Near Hopefully - NERN - 02-25-2015

I absolutely agree Lunarscope.
The family has dealt with so much and I believe today was the end of it for them and they left.
This was one last statement they could make before deliberations.
They essentially turned their backs on Arias - completely.
It will not go unnoticed.

As I have been predicting' My money is on a swift DP agreement' into a verdict before or after lunch tomorrow!
Theirs only one factor to vote' Life, Death or Undecided, no other conditions are tabled, I cannot see a juror that sides with Martinez changing his/her mind, and I cannot see anyone arguing for Jodi in deliberations. The longer that jury ponder' the more likely of having the Judge decided her fate and this time instructions explain that the judge can allow release after 25 years (Jodi at 52) and they are privileged to the Judge/Jodi interactions that we are not.
I don't think the jury wants any possibility of release after 25 years to follow their decision or indecision!

I'll say one thing about Martinez today and that's I wish he went longer and said more, I was hoping he would speak first thing tomorrow, but all we get is second hand tweets due to trials privacy and I can't support my words when after the case concludes we get to finally learn details unreported!
